Overview
AgentGPT was the browser tab that made autonomous agents legible: give it a goal, watch it propose a task list, run each step, observe the result and re-plan, all in a clean React interface instead of a terminal. Reworkd AI built it on a Next.js front end with a Python worker, and in its year of momentum it showed what the 2023 wave had not: the loop was understandable to people who never read a stack trace. Self-hosting was real too: clone the repo, run the setup script, add model keys, and the app serves on port 3000, with OpenAI as the primary provider plus optional Serper and Replicate integrations.
Judgement: the project is dead as software. The GitHub repository is archived and read-only, closed on 28 January 2026, and the last commit anywhere is 29 April 2025, sixteen months before this check on 2026-09-20. The 36,000-plus stars are a monument, not a maintenance signal, and 219 issues froze open with it. The licence is GPL-3.0, which matters if you fork: copyleft, not the Apache terms most agent frameworks use, so a commercial product built on it inherits those obligations. Nothing is patched any more, including the dependency chain around an OpenAI API surface that has since changed twice, so self-hosting today is an exercise in repair. Nobody should start new work here. Read it to learn what a task loop is, keep it as an offline demo, or if you want that shape live, pick a maintained loop — AutoGPT's rebuilt platform, CrewAI, a coding agent.
