Amazon Q Developer is the coding assistant AWS sells for its own cloud: inline suggestions in the editor, agentic task work, code-review style security scans, and the two jobs generic assistants approximate poorly - AWS-service-specific guidance on permissions, costs and which database fits, plus large automated transformations, most famously upgrading long-lived Java codebases. It shows up where AWS teams already work, in VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio, Eclipse, the CLI and the AWS console, and it is a good fit when the problem is shaped like AWS.

Where it loses is exactly that gravity. Off the AWS estate the day-to-day coding trails frontier assistants, and the commercial picture moved in 2026: AWS has flagged an end-of-support date for the older standalone IDE plugin experience while steering new agentic-IDE work toward its separate product, Kiro, so a buyer today should ask what the tool they install will look like a year from now. It is also a closed, cloud-metered service, not a self-hostable one. Before adopting, check the free-versus-Pro split and per-user pricing, which IDE integrations are current versus deprecated, and how much value you would actually get if your stack is only half on AWS.
