Decision notes

Official-document research

Based on the cited documentation. We did not use the product, purchase a plan, or run quality, speed or reliability tests in this review.

Consider it for

  • Python teams able to manage images, dependencies and model licences

Choose another approach if

  • An all-inclusive hosted model licence or guaranteed runtime performance
  • Assuming every BYOC channel has the same control plane

Pricing and conditions

Current terms unconfirmed

The Apache-2.0 library has no software licence fee; hardware, storage, operations and models remain separate costs. Bento's pricing link currently leads to Modular, which distinguishes shared token endpoints, dedicated compute and BYOC time/management terms. Those pages do not confirm an applicable BentoCloud quote or transfer every Modular rate to this library. The exact product/SKU, amount, currency, tax, region, commitment, included usage and overage remain unconfirmed; request the actual order.

Code, model and service licensing

Apache-2.0 covers BentoML code with licence/notices, modification markings and separate trademark rights; it does not license packaged weights, data, dependencies or outputs. Local operation, BentoCloud and Modular hosting are distinct contracts/data paths. If choosing the linked Modular service, its proprietary terms reserve platform rights, retain user-content ownership but permit lawful use/disclosure of Derivative Data and continuing rights to content incorporated there; third-party models remain separate. These terms are not applied to the standalone Apache library. Actual hosted training, deletion/backup periods and the applicable BentoCloud agreement were not confirmed; BYOC wording alone proves no universal zero retention.

Overview

BentoML is a Python library for serving inference APIs and combining models. A Bento packages service code, dependencies, model artifacts and configuration; containerization produces an image for Docker-compatible environments. Packaging includes directory files by default, so exclusions and secrets require care.

The library, BentoCloud/BYOC documentation and the currently linked Modular commercial channel have different scopes. Older BentoCloud BYOC docs place operators/deployments in your VPC and the control plane outside; current Modular material describes its own deployment arrangements. Confirm the selected architecture and contract rather than merging those into a no-data-leaves guarantee. No throughput comparison or deployment result was measured.

Pros / Cons

Pros

  • Service code, dependencies and model artifacts packaged together
  • Apache-2.0 library with container deployment paths

Cons

  • Packaging and deployment compatibility remain operator work
  • Commercial architecture and billing require channel confirmation

Who it's for

01

Python model APIs and multi-model services

02

Controlled packaging for container-based deployment

Bottom line

Evaluate BentoML for packaging and serving, and obtain the exact managed-service architecture, pricing and data terms separately.
