Overview

Botpress is the studio for teams that want a canvas and a repo: visual flows for the conversation, TypeScript for the parts the canvas cannot express, and a self-host story that Voiceflow will not lead with. It predates GPT-4 as a chatbot framework and grew an LLM layer instead of dying.

Compared with Voiceflow it is more engineer-shaped and less CX-polished; compared with rolling LangGraph it is faster to a first agent and slower to an arbitrary graph. Licensing and cloud packaging have shifted — read the current terms before you assume MIT forever. For a support bot you might need to run inside the firewall, it is a serious candidate.

Pros / Cons

Pros

  • Canvas plus real code when you need it
  • Self-host path for regulated chat
  • Survived from pre-LLM chatbot days
  • Channel connectors without a custom gateway

Cons

  • Less polished for pure CX editors
  • License and cloud terms have moved
  • Complex graphs still want an engineering framework
