Overview

Claude Code is the agent that normalized “the terminal is the IDE” for a generation of developers: install it, navigate to a repo, and describe the task in plain language — it maps the codebase, proposes an approach, edits across files, runs the tests and commits, checking in at the right moments. Its edge is Claude's long context and judgment: on gnarly refactors and unfamiliar codebases it routinely makes the plan you wish a junior had made.

CLAUDE.md files give projects persistent memory (conventions, commands, gotchas), and MCP hooks extend it into browsers, databases and issue trackers. The costs are real: subscription or API billing that scales with ambition, and runaway sessions that burn tokens when prompts are vague. Compared with Cline (BYOK, open source) it is opinionated and polished; compared with Copilot it is agentic rather than autocomplete. For deep work — refactors, migrations, debugging haunted code — it is currently the benchmark.
