Documented terms
The Apache-2.0 software grant has no license charge; it supplies neither model credits nor a provider account. Inference can require an API bill, an eligible existing subscription or local hardware; extensions can add service costs. Provider units, currency, tax, region, subscription eligibility and total cost were not independently priced. Any provider onboarding credit offer has its own conditions.
Pricing source read:
Pricing or terms sourceCode, model and service licensing
Apache-2.0 covers Goose code, with license, change notices and applicable NOTICE requirements on redistribution; it does not license provider models, extensions, input material or generated output. Usage-data documentation describes opt-in anonymous metrics excluding conversations/code/tool arguments. Separately, prompts, conversations and accessed information may be sent to the selected provider under its retention and privacy policies. This is not a universal no-training or zero-retention promise.

Overview
Goose is an AAIF project that runs an agent on your computer through a desktop app, CLI or API. Configured model providers supply inference; MCP extensions add access to tools, files and other systems. Local execution of the client does not mean every model or extension is local.
The extensions guide says the Developer extension is enabled and Goose operates autonomously by default, allowing commands and file changes without approval. Permission modes and tool permissions can change that behavior. Select providers and extensions deliberately and review their access before using sensitive workspaces. Documentation and malware checks do not establish that every command or third-party server is safe.

Pros / Cons
Pros
- Model-provider choice
- Extensible MCP tool connections
Cons
- Default autonomy needs an explicit permission review
- Model and extension costs and policies vary
Who it's for
Assisted repository work
Tool-connected personal workflows
Bottom line
Consider Goose when you can manage model accounts, extensions and permissions; a free local client does not make inference free or all processing private.
