Decision notes

Official-document research

Based on the cited documentation. We did not use the product, purchase a plan, or run quality, speed or reliability tests in this review.

Consider it for

  • People who can maintain a self-hosted server and backups
  • Teams able to review software/model licenses and sharing permissions

Choose another approach if

  • A maintenance-free hosted storage contract
  • The only copy of irreplaceable media or an assumed all-local deployment

Pricing and conditions

Current terms unconfirmed

The published software is available under AGPL-3.0; self-hosting still costs compute, storage, backup and administration. The purchase page returned no readable offer, so the former USD 25/100 product-key amounts, tax, region, scope and current purchase conditions were not reconfirmed and are not quoted. The FAQ refers to product keys and commercial/reseller arrangements but supplies no current amount. No hosted-service price or guaranteed support entitlement was established.

Code, model and service licensing

The linked source uses AGPL-3.0. Redistribution and modified versions have notice, license and corresponding-source obligations; a modified network service must offer its corresponding source to remote users under section 13. This does not grant trademarks, third-party model rights or rights in uploaded photos. Immich's commercial guidelines address integrations and reseller representation separately. Data handling depends on your server, backups, sharing and any remote ML host; the remote container's stated non-persistence is not a guarantee for the whole installation or an external host. For a concrete example, Immich's buffalo_l model card identifies InsightFace models; the upstream README distinguishes MIT code from training data/models restricted to non-commercial research and explicitly directs buffalo_l licensing inquiries separately. Choosing buffalo_l does not gain commercial model rights from Immich's AGPL or a product key. Commercial deployments must check the selected weights and obtain any required separate authorization; this does not make all Immich software noncommercial.

Basis and limits of the recorded score

The existing 4.8 editorial score is retained. Its original scoring evidence was not recovered; this docs-only update did not measure search quality, backup reliability or comparative performance and did not re-score it.

Overview

Immich provides a self-hosted photo/video server with web and mobile clients, albums, sharing, face grouping and contextual CLIP search. Search can also filter metadata, dates, locations and OCR text. Model choice affects language coverage, memory and indexing requirements; the documentation's model comparisons are vendor measurements, not tests conducted for this directory.

You operate storage, database, access controls, updates and independent backups. Mobile background backup depends on the operating system and should not be mistaken for a verified recovery plan. ML can run on a separate host, to which image previews are sent, so self-hosted does not necessarily mean every operation stays on one device. Assess it with a recovery procedure and a defined local/remote deployment boundary.
