Open WebUI

Open WebUI is what you install after Ollama: a Docker command later, your local models have a polished ChatGPT-grade interface — chat history, markdown, code highlighting, voice, document RAG, and multi-user accounts with roles. For families, labs and companies keeping AI in-house, it turns a model server into a product.

It is deliberately backend-agnostic: point it at Ollama, OpenAI-compatible endpoints, or both simultaneously and switch models mid-conversation. The tool/function system lets non-developers add web search or custom logic per model. The trade is that it is UI plumbing, not model quality — garbage model in, garbage chat out — and rapid releases occasionally break plugins. As the standard face of self-hosted AI, its position is close to unchallenged.
