Code, model and service licensing

You own Customer Data and Custom Apps excluding Retool platform components; the platform is proprietary even when self-hosted. Customer terms describe no current mechanism to move Custom Apps off-platform. AI terms recognize output rights to the extent law allows, require input/third-party rights and separate agent actions from output. Retool says it currently does not train its models on customer materials/output; future training requires advance notice and opt-out. Managed-model contracts prohibit providers' own training; customer-managed providers have separate terms. This is not a zero-retention guarantee.

Overview

Retool's current app builder generates React-based apps from prompts and connects them to your resources. The Classic editor remains a separate documented workflow for components, queries and JavaScript. The vendor says existing Classic apps continue to work; the new builder is recommended for new development.

Evaluate database permissions, generated queries and agent actions before deployment. Billing separates builders, internal users, external users, AI credits and workflow or agent usage. Self-hosted deployment is a contracted proprietary option, not an open-source engine. App ownership also does not establish that the app can run outside Retool. This review did not build or connect an app.
