SharePoint Copilot

Copilot in SharePoint is Microsoft's assistant layer over the libraries and sites a company already has. It answers questions across content you can reach, runs workflows, and builds sites, pages, lists, reports and Office files from natural language, on a Microsoft-managed OpenAI reasoning model that may be swapped. Microsoft's own deployment documentation is the most useful page here because it is blunt about plumbing: answers are trimmed to what the signed-in user can already see, Restricted Content Discovery still suppresses it entirely, and the SharePoint features come with a Microsoft Copilot licence rather than a separate add-on.

This is the strongest AI answer for organisations whose real knowledge base is a messy SharePoint estate, precisely because nobody will migrate that estate. It is weakest where trimming cannot help: nothing stops it citing a file that has been wrong since 2016, because access rights are not freshness. Microsoft states it does not run in GCC, GCC High, DoD, air-gapped or 21Vianet clouds, and that supported languages are only the overlap of SharePoint's and Copilot's lists. Read the admin chapter before assuming your people have it — this moved from opt-in to opt-out preview, availability is still steered with PowerShell tenant settings named for the earlier preview, and per-user daily and weekly usage caps apply during preview. If Notion or Confluence is home, skip it. If SharePoint is the dump, buy the AI that comes to the dump.
