Decision notes
Official-document research
Based on the cited documentation. We did not use the product, purchase a plan, or run quality, speed or reliability tests in this review.
Consider it for
- Developers able to inspect tools and configure an execution backend
Choose another approach if
- A finished hosted service or secure isolation with no setup
Pricing and conditions
Documented terms
Apache-2.0 code has no license fee. Model inference, remote sandboxes, Hub hosting, hardware and operations are separate. No unified managed-service quote, provider allowance, usage rate, ISO currency, tax or regional total was verified.

Pricing or terms sourceCode, model and service licensing
Apache-2.0 covers the library code with license/notice obligations. Selected models, weights, tools, Hub artifacts and external services have their own rights and contracts. User content may travel to inference, tools, sandbox or telemetry services according to configuration; the code license is not a universal no-training, output-rights or retention promise.

Original 4.6/5 retained. The original scoring worksheet and hands-on evidence are unavailable; this documentation review did not re-score the product.
Overview
smolagents provides Python agents whose actions can be code or structured tool calls. It connects selected model and tool backends and supports sharing tools and agents through the Hugging Face Hub. The documented telemetry integrations can send run traces to a chosen backend after instrumentation; they are not proof that all configurations have identical logging.
CodeAgent runs generated code locally by default through a restricted Python executor. Import controls and operation limits are not complete isolation. Optional sandbox paths separate individual code snippets or the whole agent system, with different setup and credential requirements. Choose the execution boundary before handling a real task; this review did not install or execute the library.

Pros / Cons
Pros
- Code and tool-calling approaches in one library
- Execution and tracing choices are documented
Cons
- Local default is not complete security isolation
- Model, tool, sandbox and telemetry choices add dependencies
Who it's for
Studying supervised agent loops
Building a bounded workflow with selected model and tool providers
Bottom line
A configurable agent library for developers willing to own execution isolation, data flow and operating cost.
