GLOSSARY

AI Slop

The flood of low-effort, mass-produced AI content — listicles, fake images, bot comments — that increasingly pollutes search, social feeds and now training data.

Generation got cheap; curation didn't keep up. The result is slop: SEO pages written for rankings instead of readers, AI-generated book spam, comment bots, and photo dumps that crowd out human work. It is simultaneously a user-experience problem (search feels worse), an economic problem (attention becomes worthless), and a training-data problem — models trained on slop produce slop, a slow-motion version of model collapse at internet scale.

The responses taking shape: provenance standards and watermarking, search engines demoting low-originality content, and platforms requiring disclosure. For anyone publishing AI-assisted work, the bar moves in the same direction: original signal, clear disclosure, and editing — the exact things slop skips.
