Inpainting
Regenerating only a selected part of an image — erase a stranger, swap a product, extend a background — while the rest stays pixel-identical.
The model fills the masked region conditioned on the surrounding pixels and your prompt, so the new content matches the lighting, perspective and grain of what stays. It is the surgical instrument of image editing: remove objects, replace garments on a kept model, fix AI hands, or place your product into a generated scene without re-rolling the whole image.
The sibling technique is outpainting — extending an image beyond its original borders. Both turned AI image tools from slot machines into editors: instead of rerolling everything, professionals keep what works and regenerate only the part that doesn't.
