Overview

Polycam did for 3D capture what phone cameras did for photography: it removed the specialist equipment. Point a phone at an object, room or building; the app reconstructs textured mesh from plain photos, or — on LiDAR devices — generates fast, dimensionally reliable scans, floor plans and, increasingly, Gaussian splat captures that look photographic from any angle.

The export side is where professionals stay: GLTF, OBJ, FBX and USDZ feed Blender, Unity, Unreal, SketchUp and AR viewers, while the web viewer handles client sharing without any installs. It will not replace terrestrial laser scanners for survey-grade work, and cluttered scenes still test its reconstruction. But as the default answer to “get this real-world thing into a 3D pipeline today,” Polycam owns its category on mobile.
